Bologna Home of the Data Center of the European Weather Center
Bologna was chosen to be the home of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) data center.
The decision was made by the ECMWF Council, which met in Reading, England, where the current headquarters of ECMWF is located which has thus awarded this advanced project, proposed by the Emilia-Romagna Region. With the support of important Italian institutions and agencies operating in the field of weather forecast, monitoring and environmental protection, research and civil protection services and with the support of the Italian government which applied as a candidate at the European level.
The location designated for the project will be part of the Tecnopolo di Bologna site, owned by the Emilia-Romagna Region. The building‘s interior is currently being renovated and has already been allocated by the Municipality of Bologna to host research and innovation organizations.
The ECMWF data center will immediately be assigned an area of 9,000 square meters, including office space and an area for super computers on the ground floor. There is also the possibility of further expanding the space by 6,000 square meters allowing for hosting other research related activities.
